Hearing Associates of Libertyville, IL
Audiology Services

Hearing aid fitting is a critical part of your success with hearing aids, which is why it’s important to come to us for professional services. Hearing aids work extremely well when they are fitted to your ears and adjusted for your hearing needs and preferences.

First our hearing professionals will check that your hearing aids are physically comfortable, then we’ll program the hearing instruments, check your hearing with the hearing aids in place, and show you the advanced features of your new hearing aids and how to care for them.

We help you get the best sound with your hearing aids

We will program your new hearing aids based on the results of your hearing test and your individual preferences and unique listening environments. We can fine tune your hearing instruments to help you hear in a variety of situations including restaurants, crowds and other difficult listening situations. Hearing is subjective, so even someone with the same hearing loss as you may prefer to have their hearing aids programmed differently.

Live Speech Mapping

At Hearing Associates we also use Live Speech Mapping, a fitting process that uses probe microphones and live real-time speech to allow you and your family members to immediately see and understand the benefits of hearing aids and fitting adjustments.

Hearing and Follow-up Care

We want you to get maximum benefit from your hearing aids. Over the course of one to three follow-up visits, we’ll look at the situations where you thrive and those where you might need some improvement. We’ll adjust your hearing aids based on your experience with them.

Remember that today’s hearing instruments are highly programmable, and small adjustments may make a big difference. All hearing aids should be comfortable with respect to the physical fit and the sound loudness. If there is any discomfort, you should return to us immediately for alterations to provide a comfortable fit.

Hear better, live better.

Getting Used to Your Hearing Aids

It takes time to adjust to hearing aids. In general, the greater the hearing loss and the longer the hearing loss has been present, the more challenging the transition to using hearing aids. We’ve had patients that needed only a few days to get used to their new hearing aids, but most need a few weeks to a few months.

Be realistic. Hearing loss typically develops over many years. Becoming reacquainted with sounds while using hearing aids will take practice and time. It is important not to become disillusioned or frustrated while your brain adjusts to the new sounds provided by your hearing instruments. The time you spend adjusting to your new hearing aids is well worth it.

There is no perfect way to learn how to adjust to hearing aids. Try to be patient with yourself, and return to our office for further adjustments or consultation if needed. We’re here to help you through this process.

Getting the Most from Your Hearing Aids

There are three things you can do to get the most from your hearing aids and to help us adjust them so you get the maximum benefit from wearing them:

  1. Wear the hearing aids as much as possible. The more you wear them, the more your brain will get used to the new sounds you are hearing!
  2. Keep a journal with the changes you have noticed with your new hearing aids. It is helpful for the audiologist to know what you like about your new hearing aids and what areas there are for improvement. That way, we can make adjustments as needed according to your listening needs and preferences.
  3. Be patient. Using hearing aids is a big change! It can take time to adjust to it. Our audiologists will complete real ear measurements and aided sound field testing in the office to ensure you are getting the best benefit from your hearing aids. It may take a few weeks to a few months for your brain to adjust to your optimal hearing level.
